I most definitely feel it is hereditary, Amy. A few years back I met my birth sister who grew up on the East Coast. She is a retired pastry chef who, after culinary school, had a position at a bakery I used to go to in my hometown on the West Coast.
So delightful to read about you as seen through your loving mother's eyes, Amie! Not only are you "sisters of the skillet" but also of the written word, both clever writers, cooks and gifted storytellers. Such a joy to read and then the bonus of great recipes to try. I've never made mushroom crepes, but now I'm bound to try.
if cooking is hereditary is skipped through my grandmother (who preferred having a cook to cooking) and my mother (an amazing human but is often challenged in the kitchen) to root and rise within me
Your mom's writing cadence is wonderful to read and I love her art, too. Love of the kitchen, whether it's baking, cooking, or puttering, is a multi-generational and wide-spread trait in my extended family. ❤️
Oh Amie, beautiful and delicious! Those mushrooms sure are magical.
It took me years to gain confidence in my cooking, although I'd always cooked at home and enjoyed it. When I first started cooking meals for my not-yet-but-he-is-now-husband I relied on pasta with an easy sauce, that kind of thing - I was so desperate not to cook something awful and send him running away that I'd put my culinary blinkers on!
These days I cook intuitively, and love the whole process - the planning, the shopping, the preparing, the storing, the cooking and the eating. I'd picked up a load of skills from Mum, but only as an adult did I begin to fly with them.

Totally agree! It’s in our genes.

How sweet! Thanks for the love and encouragement, Ruth.
Lovely story! My brother and I cook very diffrently, but I'd say we have both inherited the 'intuitive cooking' gene from our mum.
I continue to admire and aspire to your culinary intuition. Fearless cooking!

Puttering in the kitchen is how I roll! Thanks for reading, Mary.
