I always knew the Whoopie pie was Maine invented! You’ll have to travel to Rochester, NY where the Garbage Plate was invented. Often copied…Also, thanks for including the penguin selfie! Am I famous?

I’m definitely gonna need more on the Garbage Plate. And yes—you’re worldwide, baby!

I love the penguin ice bucket! My friend's mother used it to keep baked beans warm! I enjoy your words.

Cooking Downeast and it's sequel has been a favorite ever since I used by grandmother's old copy--I can still picture the green cover. I love the commentary. In fact, my son just made the Toll House cookie recipe out of one of those a few days ago.

I can rest easier tonight knowing that the State of Maine is where the original Whoopie Pie was created. Thank you, Amie!

Curious if you’ve made them—or consider them a pie?

I’ve not made them. I defer to Raymond Sokolov who wrote, “ I may not be able to define a pie, but I know one when I see it.”

cooking definitely makes the world suck less, but about that cake…are you sure the culprit wasn’t the 🍍????

They served a dessert that they called whoopie pies in the cafeteria when I was in grade school. As I type, I am wondering if they were called moon pies. Either way, they were huge, or so they seemed to a kid. Maine is the state that comes up when you do an online search.

Was it originally a Whoopsie Pie, as the title of the recipe reads? Perhaps it began with an epic fail! I've had so many--including the classic of dumping salt into a recipe instead of sugar (I've done that more than once, even recently!). Pomegranate molasses in a pineapple upside-down cake does sound like a recipe for puckered lips, but in defense of this ingredient, I made a delicious middle eastern dip called muhammara that included a couple of tablespoons of the stuff. I've still got the better part of a bottle in my fridge, so now I feel obliged to come up with more uses. Thanks for the challenge--and a great post, Amie! Love the picture of your very cute niece, but I've never heard of a "penguin" pan. Very, very cool!🐧
